Tour of Wessex Results
The first running of The Tour of Wessex on Sunday 22nd August resulted in a win for the Mercedes of Andy Lane and Paul Robinson.
It was not a good event for the leading championship contenders with both Neal/Briggs and Bricknell/Pickering outside the top 10 and Sykes/Cooper failing to finish. Mike & Matthew Vokes gained some useful points from finishing 8th overall in the Hillman Imp to move up to 2nd driver and 1st navigator in the championship tables.

Porsche Power Wins The East Anglian Classic
The East Anglian Classis Rally is now the only remaining 1-day regularity road rally in the Clubmans Championship that originated as a full weekend event that included a night navigational section. From those tougher origins a slick 1-day event has evolved.
It was therefore disappointing that only 35 crews had entered the historic element of the event, with 3 of these eventually non-starting. However, most of the regular Championship contenders were present, but current champion driver – Martin Neal – was without his regular partner – Mick Briggs – who was away on the Classic Marathon, he lead the field away from the luxuriant Barnhan Broom Golf and Country Club start/finish venue with Richard Dix holding the maps.
The route comprised of 6 regularities and 11 tests, generally following a clockwise circular route from the start. Navigation for 5 of the regularities was effectively pre-plot, with only the final regularity requiring any serious navigational input, as it was “plot and bash.” The opening regularity commenced immediately from the start car park and caused little difficulty apart from crossing the edges of the 3 maps used. A sign of things to come was apparent at the first test at Frensham. Several crews were to beat the test bogey time – conditions were dry and fast, and the more powerful cars were to have a good day.
Much credit must be given to the organising team, who had provided each crew with a model Road Book with crystal clear test diagrams and other instructions. The second regularity was of a “London Road Book” style. A series of map references had been given to navigators prior to the start that were pre-plotted. The route instructions were then simple arrive/depart instructions. Most crews had little problem here, although Ian Crammond/Kerry Nash; and Tony Sheach/Colin Wake had more trouble than most. Already Ali Green/Jean Chmura were out suffering a broken gearbox, and the next test at Oulton Street saw Emma and Rob Henchoz plough into the field of wheat immediately after the water splash. Fortunately neither crewmember came to any harm, but their PV less so. At lunch the leader board showed a jubilant David Mustarde/ Peter Blackett in a slender lead from Jim Deacon/Ian Doble in the rapid MGB, and John Sykes/Nick Cooper in the Mini Estate.
The afternoon session continued with 2 more very fast tests at Brandiston where Paul Hernaman/Crow began a sequence of fastest times, making excellent use of Porsche power. A very rough road lead to the final 4 tests at Hethel, which initially looked as though they would not affect the results significantly as they were so short. However, the canny Crow used all his initiative in code board spotting to see Paul scorch through the final test taking 20+ seconds off most close rivals.
The final regularity now remained – the only “plot and bash” section. This was to reshape the leader board with David Mustarde/Peter Blackett dropping 48 seconds to Paul Hernaman/Crow’s 24 seconds. The ever-steady Peter Horsburgh/Alistair Bell took 3rd place on “furthest cleanest” from the fast improving John Sykes/Nick Cooper.
Early Championship leaders Mike and Matthew Vokes suffered mechanical problems prior to the Hethel tests, but managed to get to the finish although well off of the pace. Last year’s Champion – Martin Neal gathered useful points in finishing 7th overall, and is still in contention for a second consecutive Championship win – although this has never been achieved in the past.
1 Paul Hernaman/Ray Crowther (Porsche 911) 1188

4 John Sykes/Nick Cooper (Mini Estate) 1225
5 Jim Deacon/Ian Doble (MGB Roadster) 1226

Hughes win for Deacon/Doble

Jim Deacon and Ian Doble secured a worthy win in the MGB in Kent on the bank holiday weekend's Hughes Rally. Their winning margin was 34 seconds from the tied Sprites of Martin Neal/Mick Briggs and Simon Parson/Trevor Cattermole, "furthest-cleanest" giving better to the yellow car of Parson/Cattermole through being one second faster on the first of the day's ten special tests.
Local brothers Steven & Chris Winter took 4th place with some cracking test times in the big Volvo, while Mike & Matthew Vokes returned to the championship with a 5th place despite the young navigator's right arm being strapped up for a broken collarbone.
49 cars started the rally, with 34 chasing championship points. Best Novices were Robert Spittal/Richard Gould in the MGBGT, finishing in 15th place overall. A special award in memory of the Hughes Rally's great friend and supporter Warren Chmura, was won by Jim Deacon by setting the fastest total time over two grass tests at Headcorn Aerodrome.

Leukaemia Historic Rally
Martin Neal and Mick Briggs in the Austin-Healey Sprite finished third on the Leukaemia Historic Rally on 15th May, to take the maximum Clubmans Championship points. They were beaten overall by the Mini of Worth Birkill & Mark Appleton and the Escort of winners David Harris & Richard Hands, Harris having made this event his own with numerous wins over the years.
Paul Richards/Peter Cox did well to nurse their Mini to the finish with a collapsed front wheel bearing, salvaging 10th place. The event was notable for the number of non-finishers, retirements claiming 8 championship contender cars. Roger Bricknell/Ryan Pickering in the TR4 lost their championship lead with a devastating 30 minute penalty on the second regularity section, allowing John Sykes/Nick Cooper in the Mini Estate to move up the placings. Martin Neal now heads the drivers whilst Nick Cooper is top navigator.

Vokes Imp Scoops Top Marks Again on Tour of Cheshire

While the 2010 Tour of Cheshire was won by the non-championship pairing of Howard Warren and Cath Woodman, the father and son team of Mike and Matthew Vokes again scooped the maximum championship points in their Hillman Imp to consolidate their position at the top of the championship leaderboard.
From a 75-car entry there were an amazing 40 crews chasing championship points and registrations taken at the start took the number of registered championship contenders over the 100 mark. 2010 is developing into a great year for the Richard Egger Insurance HRCR Clubmans Rally Championship.
The Tour of Cheshire was organised to the usual high standard by Knutsford MC and incorporated six regularity sections and 12 special tests. Although all route instructions were issued with time for navigators to pre-plot the regularity sections, many made errors resulting in missed regularity controls and wrong approaches.
1. Howard Warren/Cath Woodman (Porsche 911) 695
2. Mike Vokes/Matthew Vokes (Hillman Imp) 730
3. Roger Bricknell/Ryan Pickering (Triumph TR4) 792
4. Peter Keel/Paul Maynard (Triumph Dolomite Sprint) 797
5. Ron Kendall/Les McGuffog (Ford Anglia) 818
6. Paul Wignall/Fred Bent (Porsche 911S) 838
7. Roy Gillingham/Andy Gibson (MGA) 845
8. Jayne Wignall/Peter Rushforth (Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint) 876
9. Wesley Coleman/Neil Guyett (Austin Mini GT) 899
10. Jim Deacon/Ian Doble (MGB Roadster) 906
