Clubmans competition moves to Norfolk
With the three championship leading crews not entered, Paul Hernaman and Ray Crowther in the Porsche 911 are favourites to win the East Anglian Classic on Saturday 19th April. The 2007 EAC winners will be looking for a good result to overcome their uncharacteristically low scores from the first two rounds of 2008. The third round of the Richard Egger Insurance Clubmans Rally Championship will be fought out on the EAC's traditional airfield special tests where the power and speed of the Porsche will give a real advantage.
Competing in their third rally on consecutive weekends, Warren and Jean Chmura will be in their pink Citroen DS which finished 3rd last year, followed by the TR4 of David Barker/David Killeen. Geoff Twigg has persuaded Graham Carter to return to the fray after a long break and has entered his faithful 1275 Cooper S.
Two HRCR officials will be driving their MG Midgets, Clubmans coordinator Andy Gibson in his Mk 3, paired up with Mike Burrows whose regular driver David Mustarde is otherwise engaged, and Competition Secretary Stan Appleton in his Mk 1, with daughter Heather on the maps.
Team GT is out in force on their local event, with the three Mini 1275GTs of James Griffiths/James Howell, Wes Coleman/Neil Guyett and David James/Neil Warren.
The one-day rally starts on Saturday morning from the Holiday Inn at Norwich and shares special test venues with the EACS Endurance Rally which is running over the weekend.

Sprites' Golden Jubilee
Martin Neal and Andy Gibson took their Austin-Healey Sprite to a 49 second victory on round 2 of the championship, the Ilkley Jubilee Historic Rally, ahead of the similar model of Simon Parson/Trevor Cattermole, an appropriate result in the 50th anniversary year of the Sprite. Previous winner and top seed, Pete Tyson/Neil Harrison had to be content with third place after completing a test incorrectly whilst another previous winner, Paul Hernamen/Ray Crowther, lost several minutes wrong-slotting. An excellent fourth place went to the Triumph TR4 of Jonathan Hancox/Richard Lambley which following their similar place on the Tour of Cheshire puts them into the lead of the HRCR Clubmans Rally Championship, ahead of the Minis of Bob & Jeanne Taylor and John Brooks/Jon Hurley.
In a ‘rally of two halves' the morning's bright sunshine turned into blizzard conditions after lunch adding extra spice to those tests on higher ground. Best novices were Adrian Stewart/Tom Hynd (Mini Cooper) and best beginners were Ken Lowes/Diana Dobson (MGB) the latter crew again repeating their Cheshire performance. The accompanying Jubilee Run with simpler navigation was won by the Avenger crew of Kevin Clark/Tom Leeming ahead of the Triumph TR3 team of John and Meg Ball.
Top 10
1. Martin Neal/Andy Gibson (Austin-Healey Sprite) 13.26
2. Simon Parson/Trevor Cattermole (Austin-Healey Sprite) 14.15
3. Pete Tyson/Neil Harrison (Cooper S) 14.44
4. Jonathan Hancox/Richard Lambley (Triumph TR4) 14.46

7. Warren Chmura/Jean Chmura (Citroen DS) 15.24
8. Adrian Stewart/Tom Hynd (Mini-Cooper) 15.31

High class entry for Ilkley Jubilee
The Clubmans Rally Championship resumes this weekend in Yorkshire with the second round of 2008, the Ilkley Jubilee. Last year's Jubilee winners and reigning Clubmans Champions, Jim Deacon and Dave Wilson, do not have their new rally car ready, so local stars Tyson/Harrison lead the 60-car field away in their Cooper S, hotly pursued by the top championship runners. A 150-mile tour through the fantastic Yorkshire Dales scenery is in store for the rally runners and also the following Jubilee Run cars.
2006 champions Paul Hernaman and Ray Crowther in the Porsche 911 are at 2, followed by the winners of the last round, Bob and Jeanne Taylor in their Mini. Autotest expert Martin Neal has championship coordinator Andy Gibson navigating at 4 in his Austin-Healey Sprite and will be taking it easy over the slippery Scargill Reservoir cattle grid which sent them off the road in 2006. David Mustarde and Mike Burrows are at 7 in the Alfa Giulia Sprint and will be hoping for a good finish to compensate for their lowly last round result.
Jonathan Hancox and Richard Lambley have been seeded at 10, despite their excellent 4th place finish on the Tour of Cheshire, while the other notable Triumph TR4 crew of David Barker/David Killeen is at 12. Neil Dowie/David Taylor have the GT6 at 'unlucky for some' 13, with the big pink Citroen of Warren & Jean Chmura making their first championship appearance of the year at 14.
In all 17 crews will be chasing championship points, although it's certainly not too late for more entered HRCR members to join the championship and they can register with the championship coordinator at the rally start at Craven Cattle Market, or right now by entering their details on-line. >>HERE

Taylors win the Tour of Cheshire
Bob and Jeanne Taylor claimed a long awaited and well deserved first ever outright win, on the opening round of the 2008 HRCR Clubmans Rally Championship, the Tour of Cheshire on Saturday 8th March. Running-in a new 1293cc engine in their Mini, the Taylors' finished 21 seconds clear of a closely bunched trio led by Roy Gillingham/Andy Gibson in an MGA.
The morning start from rally HQ at Cranage Hall, near Holmes Chapel, led into the usual mix of road regularity sections and short special tests at various venues ranging from stately homes to a sewage works. However the highlight of the rally came after lunch with an 18-mile test around Swynnerton Camp, run with 30 mph timed-to-the-minute road rally timing through 27 time and passage controls and just the final TC timing to the second. Paul Wignall/Mark l'Anson (Alfa Giulietta) achieved the best performance here, emerging after a very hectic 36 minutes with just 31 penalty points, followed by Roy Gillingham/Andy Gibson (MGA) on 39, while eventual winners the Taylors were 5th best with 80 points. The intricacies of the Swynnerton test route, although accurately defined by a well presented tulip roadbook, resulted in many cars collecting costly penalties for wrong approaches and missed controls, these including the two top seeded Porsches of Paul Hernaman and Adam Wiseberg. All credit goes to the Knutsford & District M.C. organisers for devising and setting up the test, plus mobilising an army of 150 marshals to man it.
Best over the rest of the special tests was the Volvo Amazon of Wesley Massam and veteran navigator Willy Cave, from the Porsche 911 of Adam Wiseberg/Peter Blackett and the Sunbeam Rapier of Robin Shackleton/Ralph Lodge.
A number of last-minute registrations resulted in 24 crews scoring Clubmans championship points. Worthy of a mention are John Brooks/Jon Hurley for getting their Mini into 8th place overall, Heather Appleton for navigating father Stan's MG Midget to 11th and Julian Broadhurst/Avril Banks for taking 13th in their Morris Minor.
Top 10 Finishers:
1 Bob Taylor/Jeanne Taylor (Austin Mini) 594
2 Roy Gillingham/Andy Gibson (MGA) 615
3 Jon Wood/Paul Bosdet (Mini Cooper) 616
4 Jonathan Hancox/Richard Lambley (Triumph TR4) 623

Quality Entry for Tour of Cheshire
The opening round of the Clubmans Rally Championship, the Tour of Cheshire on Saturday 8th March, has attracted an entry of nearly 70 crews who will be led away by last year's winners, Paul Hernaman and Ray Crowther in their 1972 Porsche 911. Chasing them for championship points among the front-running crews are David Mustarde/Mike Burrows (Alfa Gilulia Sprint GT), Jonathan Hancox/Richard Lambley (TR4), Bob & Jeanne Taylor (Mini), David Barker/David Killeen (TR4) and Richard Fisher/Neil Lewis (Lancia Fulvia HF).
Clubmans contenders are joined on this event by contenders for the new-format HRCR Maxsport Historic Rally Championship and also the HRCR Tartan Series. The rally starts from Cranage Hall, near Holmes Chapel, from where the crews face 6 regularity sections in Cheshire and Staffordshire and 12 special tests including one 18 miles long. More details can be found at the Tour of Cheshire website at http://www.tourofcheshire.co.uk/

Change to Championship Regulations
The rule changes introduced in 2007 to regulate the appearance of Clubmans championship rally cars have been rescinded for 2008. This comes after a difficult year for the championship that saw reduced entry levels on most championship rounds.
The HRCR Committee asked the views of all of the 2006 and 2007 championship contenders and the answer has come firmly back that they wish the championship regulations to go no further than that required by the MSA's 'Blue Book' historic rally vehicle regulations. However the 2007 regulations do still remain a strong recommendation to anyone preparing a car for historic road rallies and an article explaining the relevent MSA vehicle regulations will be appearing in the February issue of OldStager.
