Dave Morris takes the wheel of the HRCR Clubman’s Championship Beginners Series
Dave Morris is the new Secretary of the HRCR Clubman’s Championship Beginners Series for 2027, bringing a wealth of experience from both motorsport and professional life.
Dave spent 16 years working in education, initially teaching mathematics before moving into IT, followed by a further 16 years with Railtrack in signalling and operations management. Now happily retired, he has spent the last four years becoming increasingly involved with the Historic Rally Car Register’s Clubman’s Road Rally Championship.
His route into road rallying is far from new. Dave was a road navigator and stage co-driver during the 1980s before taking a break from the sport. More recently, he returned to competition alongside his wife, Jac, initially navigating for her before the pair swapped seats.
There was also a five-year spell in karting, beginning with TKM 100cc machinery before progressing to Europa 125cc geared karts.
The couple have steadily worked their way through the HRCR Clubman’s competition, winning the Novice Championship before moving into the Experts category. A couple of recent class trophies have added further confidence, although Dave admits that even experienced crews remain capable of the occasional mistake.
Their rallying has also expanded beyond the domestic championship, with two attempts at the Three Castles Rally followed this year by a trip into Europe for the Coppa d’Europa.
Now, with responsibility for the Beginners Series, Dave is keen to use his own experience to help new crews make the step into competitive road rallying.
“I’m hoping the Beginners Series can give a good environment for new starters and those wanting the next challenge on from Scenic Tours,” says Dave.
“The aim is to prepare crews for the Interclub Road Series as novices, once crews have mastered following a route reliably and keeping accurately to time.”
That progression is at the heart of the Beginners Series: providing a supportive environment in which newcomers can learn the fundamental skills of road rallying, build confidence and develop the consistency needed to progress further.
With his own experience of learning, competing, making mistakes and gradually moving through the categories, Dave is well placed to help the next generation of road rally crews take their first competitive steps.
