The Hughes Historic Preview

Its that time of year when we venture down to glorious Kent and compete on the roads in the South East.  No Mereworth woods this year but Clerk of the course, David Hughes, promises some exciting new test venues and 120 miles of road regularities in a different area that will provide a challenge to expert crews but not too complicated for beginners.

Although not a full entry, currently there are 40 crews who intend to compete and with some top Masters out it could be a close fight for the podium.  Certainly, last years winners Stephen Owens and Nick Bloxham (Porsche 911) could be right up there but with Ian Crammond and Matthew Vokes (Mercedes 280SL) out as well it’s going to be close.  Don’t discount Leigh Powley and Brian Goff (Toyota Corolla) either as they seem to be coming on form just at the right time.

Experts wise, Hugh Garnish and David Bell (Peugeot 205GT) did well in 2021 and will be looking to improve on their 7^th position as did Clare Grove this time with Rob Robinson ( MG Maestro).  Phil B-Wood and Kelvin Hughes could be class leaders provided they can get the Volvo P1800 back on the road after it failed to proceed on test one at the White Rose and Mark Goodwin with Anthony Davies deserve some luck soon, after having issues with the TR7 again on the White Rose.

Jacolyn Wales and David Morris (MGB) have shown some considerable promise in the novice section considering this is their first year, but Paul and Sandra Heaney (Triumph TR6) will want to make an impression as Jeff Wincott and Anne Tweddle will not be out on this event.

Hopefully the sun will shine once again and with Dan Willan not competing on this event nor is Paul Crosby and Ali Procter, now could be the time to grab valuable championship points!
