Stage Masters: Wyedean Stages

Wyedean Rally 2023

A cracking end to the 2023 season saw a relatively low number of competitors out due to the proximity of the RAC Rally. For those that patronised the Wyedean Rally it was a worthwhile trip with some classic but extremely slippery stages. The West Wales Rally Spares HRCR Stage Masters Challenge had already been decided in favour of the highly popular crew of Baz Wheeler and John Pickavance but the matter of the Gravel Cup was still to be resolved. Andy Stokes and Jonny ‘Tad’ Evans were leading but were missing the event due to contesting the RAC Rally and Hywel Davies withdrew beforehand leaving the path clear for Jonathan Brace and Paul Spooner to take the win if they could finish. The answer to that was that they could and indeed they did! Jonathan, a man of few words, let his driving do the talking and the Brace’s Bread Ford Escort RS1600 didn’t miss a beat all day. Spooner summed up the day, ‘the roads are extremely slippery and we are just short shifting to try and get some traction.’

Also out in a RS1600 was Bob Gibbons with Jon Harris reading the notes, the car had proved troublesome all season and a simple issue with the ignition was found and rectified which transformed the cars reliability. Gibbons had one moment when he beached the car at the flying finish of stage 6 but the marshals of Brecon Motor Club soon had him on his way with dented pride and a dented front wing. Stage 7 saw some more drama when the clutch fluid made a bid for freedom but the intrepid pair persevered to get the all important finish.

Eric Davis must have competed in more Wyedean Rallies than anyone else and it was joy to see a Mini out on the stages, he was nervous before the start and planned a safe steady run for the day. Apart from arriving in service with a wheel arch extension hanging off the day went to plan and points were collected.

We now look forward to the 2024 season and the annual awards dinner that precedes it, don’t forget to book your tickets and book your hotel rooms.
