All-action Pirelli is prospect

Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship

News update: Monday 17 March 2008

Competitors on the Pirelli Historic Rally (18/19 April) are in for a hectic event as route co-ordinator Alan Blake has cut the road mileage to a minimum, meaning non-stop action in the Border forests for the hard working crews.

The rally's first leg features four stages in the Kershope Forest complex, with a total of just two and a half miles of road sections between them, meaning almost non-stop action from the word go. The four stages vary in length from five to eight miles.

The pressure is no less intense on day two, which features three long stages in Kielder, Europe's largest man-made forest, with only a tiny 1.7-miles of link section. The crews will then head back to Carlisle for a city centre finish at mid-day on Saturday.

Friday evening covers around 28 stage miles, while Saturday morning includes around 24 stage miles.

Bob Bean marks 70th birthday

Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship

Date: Thursday, 6 March 2008

Legendary HRCR member Bob Bean will celebrate his 70th birthday on Saturday (8 March) by competing on the opening day of the Robin Hood Historic Stages Rally. Bob will be back in his Lotus Cortina for another BHRC campaign, 48 years after his first rally.

"My first rally was the 1960 Yorkshire Rally in a Hillman Minx convertible, and I've been competing ever since, " said Bean, who has only missed a couple of years of rallying following a serious road accident in France in the 1970s. In period, he was a leading contender in Escort Mexicos.

"I want to try and make it 50 years of rallying. I love rallying the Cortina, I did the 1968 RAC Rally in a similar car," he said. He has competed on the RAC Rally, and its current equivalent the Roger Albert Clark Rally, on 26 or 27 occasions.

Following the opening leg of the Robin Hood, Bean plans a modest celebration on Saturday night with a few friends but says he wont be over-doing things. "I don't want to spoil Sunday." Malcolm Smithson will co-drive once more this weekend as they start fifth on the road behind the similar car of Neil Calvert/Arlene Cookson.

Stouf ready for Robin Hood

Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship

News: Thursday 6 March 2008

Belgian crew Stefaan Stouf and Joris Erard are ready for their first attempt at the Robin Hood Historic Stages this weekend, having travelled to Wales on Monday for a test session at Sweet Lamb.

They then headed back to Belgium and will return to the UK for the weekend in their Escort Mk1. Co-driver Erard reported that the test was a great success, even though it snowed during the day. They shared the test with defending champion David Stokes, who was shaking his Escort down after a winter rebuild.

"It went very well and David was surprised by our driving style," said Joris. "It was good practice for the notes as I'm reading the notes in English."

BHRC partners for 2008 unveiled

Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship

Press release: Wednesday, 20 February 2008

No less than nine companies have pledged their support for the 2008 Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship.

With the BHRC now firmly established as one of the most popular rally championships in Britain, both with competitors and spectators, the support of these nine companies is playing a key role in the success of the championship.

Dunlop Tyres will again be joint title sponsors and will present six free tyres for each event. These will be awarded on a draw basis, with a pair of tyres going to one crew from each of the three championship categories.  Additionally, a set of four tyres is presented at another draw at the championship's Awards Evening each year.

The Gambia, in conjunction with the Kololi Beach Club, continues for a second year as joint title sponsor.

Mintex (Questmead) will reward the crews making the best improvement on seeding on each event. Within each of the three championship categories, a crew will win a set of front or rear brake pads.

Waterend Properties, the Bedfordshire based developer of high quality office buildings, will support awards for the best performance on the asphalt events and the best performance on the gravel events.

Revolution Motorsport Wheels will reward the star driver on each event, as judged by a panel, with a set of five Revolution Wheels in the size and design they are currently using. In addition, Revolution Wheels will present a trophy at the end of the year to the highest placed driver/co-driver using Revolution Wheels.

Other companies to be supporting the 2008 BHRC are Richard Egger Projects (motorsport insurance), Fairfield Motorsport (travel for motorsport competitors), Ton Hire (vehicle hire in Kent) and West Wales Rally Spares (rally spares and components).

Waldegard to contest Robin Hood

Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship

Press release: Wednesday, 20 February 2008

Former World Rally Champion Bjorn Waldegard will drive a Lancia Stratos on the opening round of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Alternative Sign Centre Robin Hood Historic Stages (8/9 March).

In an incredible development for both the BHRC and the Robin Hood, the 1979 World Champion has accepted an invitation to drive the VK-backed Lancia Stratos of Steve Perez.

Perez continues to make good progress after suffering a neck injury on the East African Safari Classic Rally last November, but is not yet fit to return to rallying. Instead, he has invited Waldegard to drive the Stratos, and re-new an association that scored World Rally Championship success in the mid-70s.

Waldegard will go head to head with Stig Blomqvist, the 1984 World Champion, who will also contest the opening round of the championship in a Ford Escort Mk1 from David Sutton's Historic Motorsport team.

BHRC management team plans ahead

Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship

Press release: Friday, 8 February 2008

The management team of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship met earlier this week (6 February) for a pre-season review and is already considering the 2009 event calendar.

The BHRC, which starts on 8/9 March with the Robin Hood Historic Stages, currently comprises five gravel and three asphalt events in an eight-round programme.

However, as planning for 2009 begins, the HRCR team is inviting expressions of interest from events that would like to be considered as a future round of the championship. Feedback from competitors is also welcomed and can be made by e-mail to classicchallenge@hrcr.co.uk

"We have an excellent programme of events for 2008," said championship co-ordinator Simon Marks. "But we are also aware of the need to keep the championship fresh and offer our competitors new challenges. The BHRC is currently very strong and we have a clear agenda to maintain it's high profile, and continue to deliver fantastic rallying for our competitors as well as the growing number of BHRC fans out on the stages."
