Simon Mellings & Ryan Pickering triumph on The Hughes Rally

The fifth round of the 2017 HRCR Hagerty Insurance Clubmans Road Rally Championship, The Hughes Rally, was won in convincing style by Simon Mellings and Ryan Pickering in a Toyota MR2 which is possibly, I need to check, the first Category 4 car to win one of the championship events. Bridesmaids for the second event in a row were Ian Crammond and Matthew Vokes in the Mercedes-Benz 280SL with Howard Warren and Iain Tullie, Porsche 911, in third.

The first championship Expert crew home were Gerry Simpson and Martin Phaff, Mini Cooper, 6th. Martin, being third on the regularities, was very pleased indeed, but dearly wants a 5th overall to become a Master!

Best championship Novice crew were Andy and Ros Simpson, Mini 1275GT, in 23rd place.

The Amazon Cars Challenge Cup was won by Seren and Elise Whyte, in the intrepid Standard 10. The sisters had a very good day with 7th overall beating some very much more powerful machinery, while the Hagerty Spirit of the Rally was awarded to Clare Grove, who succumbed to a tooth abscess during the event, but diverted to A&E for some painkillers and antibiotics, and still managed to get to the final MTC to be classified as a finisher, true spirit of the rally!

James Griffiths and James Howell, Mini 1275GT, have consolidated their lead in the championship; Ian Crammond and John Abel are second and third respectively for the Drivers. Richard Dix is now second with Matthew Vokes third for the Navigators.
