Brecon Motor Club Black Mountains Classic Tour
Rain on the Brecon Motor Club Black Mountains Classic Tour? Well it seems to be de rigueur on this event now but it certainly didn’t detract from a great days touring. Sixty six participating crews turned up at Gwernyfed Rugby Club for bacon and egg rolls and the highly acclaimed drivers briefing from Clerk of the Course Chris Phillips. Once all the formalities were dispensed with a section taking in Hay on Wye and the Whitney on Wye toll bridge took crews on a circuitous route via Aberedw to coffee and welsh cakes at Llangoed Hall Hotel. The beautiful surroundings did not disappoint and the break was leisurely before the route meandered off towards Ponde, Cradoc, Trallong, Forest Lodge and a run over Mynydd Illtyd with fantastic views of the Brecon Beacons.
Lunch was taken in Brecon where the cars were parked up in the grounds of Ysgol Penmaes who will benefit from a donation from Brecon Motor Club to boost its funds. Despite the damp conditions there was a good walk to be had in Brecon or a light bite in the newly refurbished theatre café next to the pretty canal basin.
The final third of the route took the cars through Talybont on Usk and Llangynidr before climbing onto Llangynidr Mountain for some great vistas. A quick dip into the industrial south and Blaenavon was followed by a pleasant run into Crickhowell and a run up the Sorgwm valley. This narrow section then wound round to the gliding club above Talgarth, new territory for many, before meeting the mayor in Talgarth town centre at the finish. Refreshment was provided back at the rugby club before crews made their farewells and headed happily for home.
