The Ilkley Jubilee Historic Rally preview
This coming weekend sees the Championship contenders head once more to the Millstones, east of Harrogate for the traditional Start / Finish venue.
In the regulations there is talk of using “another well known northern army venue” so I think we should all brush up on our previous visits to Catterick, for those who haven’t been before – you’re in for a treat!
The seeding can’t have been easy as there is a plethora of quick crews throughout the classes, with 69 cars in the Rally and a further 20 in the Ilkley Run. Henry Carr and his team being rewarded with a bumper entry for all their hard work.
Our MotorSport News guest this weekend is Rob Austin, so what can I tell you about Rob …he’s the only man I know to race in F3 and Ginetta G20’s on the same day ! – I remember he commented at the time “it’s just when you get to the braking points you need to remember which car you’re in” Rob has won races at all levels F3, Ginetta, Brit GT and BTCC, when he won his 1st Ginetta race and being interviewed for TV live he dedicated his win “to Stella Artois and Malboro Lights” – so never PC – just a wonderful wonderful character.
In 2013 Rob played Brett Lunger the American F1 driver in the film Rush, the car he drove in the film a Surtees TS19 was the actual car Brett drove at the Nurburgring crashing into the stricken Lauda Ferrari, the car now restored belongs to Rob’s father Richard. Today, Rob is a MotorSport News “ambassador” covering driver ratings in the BTCC.
Top seeds are:- Crosby/Procter, Warren/Pickering, the Bricknells, Wilson/Vokes and the Staniforths but watch out for the next 4, they are mighty quick as are the Ruddocks and the Everitt Triumph 2000.
The Experts are led away by the always laughing duo of Steele/Pitt followed by the Martins and the Woolstenhulmes but watch out for the Goodwin/Davies Dolomite
And in the Novices Smith/Lester, Cheek/Rhodes and the Binsteads look likely to contest the Championship points but for sheer fun stay and watch the Andersons in full flow in their 1936 Bentley!
