The Tour of Cheshire is the penultimate round of the 2018 HRCR Hagerty Insurance Clubmans Road Rally Championship incorporating The HRCR Amazon Cars Challenge Cup and has attracted a large field of championship and non-championship entrants as this very popular event takes place in one of the heartlands of road rallying.
Leading the field away from the now traditional start of The Poachers will be Ian Crammond and Matthew Vokes in their Category 1 Mercedes Benz 280SL, but it is a sign of the times that there are no less than six Category 4 cars in the top 13 seeds with VW Golfs being the dominant vehicle.
At 4 will be Jon Wright and Andy Pullan. Jon generously donated £1000 to the Henry Surtees Foundation for the experience. Martin Phaff has arranged for Andy Pullan to navigate for him and also loaned his Lancia Fulvia for the event. It will be Jon’s first regularity rally, I think, but he does have experience on hill climbs and sprints, so should be ok on the tests. It will be interesting to see if Andy can tame Jon’s right foot on the regularity sections. Andy has agreed to write an article about the event for the next issue of Old Stager so we all find out how they got on.
There are one or two changes to the normal pairings with Nicky Staniforth navigating for Thomas Bricknell in his VW Golf while Roger is navigating for Charles Graves in his TR4, and it’s good to see Peter Williams and Andy Darlington out together for the first time this year, and a second showing from Andrew Buzzard and Robb Lyne, in their newly acquired Ford Escort.
Suzanne Barker is with Andrew Johnson in his Lancia Fulvia, Tyler is out again with David Alcock in his bright orange Datsun 120A, while Martin Phaff is partnering Les Andrew in his MGBGT so I think there will be plenty of amusing stories at the end.
So the top ten are
1, Ian Crammond and Matthew Vokes, B1, Mercedes Benz 280SL
2, Simon Mellings and Henry Carr, E1, Nissan Stanza
3, Paul Crosby and Ali Procter, C1, Porsche 911
4, Jon Wright and Andy Pullan, B1, Lancia Fulvia
5, Neil Wilson and Leigh Powley, D1, Porsche 924
6, Richard Isherwood and Ian Canavan, E1, Nissan Stanza Jubilee

8, Andrew Buzzard and Robb Lyne, C1, Ford Escort Mexico
9, John Haygarth and Bob Hargreaves, C1, Opel Kadette Rallye

It looks like the weather may be fair in Cheshire, see you there.
PS having left the sweeties in the car to melt on the last event you will be pleased to know I’ve managed to eat them all, so there will be a new pack this weekend.
