Darell Staniforth and Les Mc Guffog, Morris Mini Cooper S, won round 2 of the 2017 HRCR Hagerty Insurance Clubmans Road Rally Championship, The North Yorkshire Classic Rally, after a day long battle with James Griffiths and James Howell, Austin Mini 1275GT. They tied on penalties at the end of the event, and the winner was decided by furthest cleanest on the Regularities with Darell and Les taking it by just one second at the third ITC in Regularity 1. It just could not have been any closer.
The top ten were,
1, Darell Staniforth/Les McGuffog, Morris Mini Cooper S, M1, 23:14s
2, James Griffiths/James Howell, Austin mini 1275GT, M2, 23:14s
3, Martin Neal/Richard Dix, Ford Escort Mexico, M2, 25:53s
4, Richard Isherwood/Ian Canavan, Nissan Stanza Jubilee, E4, 26:32s
5, Duncan Wild/Steve Skepper, Austin Mini Cooper, M2, 26:43s
6, Keith Davis/Henry Carr, MGB GT, M3, 27:25s
7, Stephen Owens/Ian Mitchell, Porsche 911 SWB, E1, 28:21s (Amazon Cup winner)
8, David Barker/David Killeen, Austin Mini Cooper, M2, 28:40s
9, John Abel/Kevin Savage, Ford Escort RS 2000, M2, 29:01s
10, Jim Deacon/David Taylor, Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Coupe, M1, 29:02s
This was Roger Burkill’s first time as Clerk of the Course, taking over from David Ruddock, and he promised a “no-nonsense event” with straight-forward navigation and speed changes for the Regularities with a mixture of special tests to suit the Minis and the more powerful Porsches and Escorts. The route circumnavigated York in an anti-clockwise direction with 13 Tests including the traditional Tholthorpe complex and the Mintex Proving Ground at Sherburn. Most of the competitors thought the tests overly complicated and rather tight, although the Regularities were enjoyed by all and everyone was smiling at the end of the day.
It was good to see some new faces in the top ten with Richard Isherwood/Ian Canavan having a very good result in their Nissan Stanza. Stephen Owens/Ian Mitchell had the lowest score on the Regularities, while Martin Neal/Richard Dix were very happy to be back on the podium in their Mexico.
Dave Leadbetter/Cath Woodman retired due to engine over-heating on Test 6 at Sherburn, although they managed more of the event than Peter Williams/Andy Darlington when their prop-shaft failed after Test 1.
The Amazon Cars Challenge Cup was won by Stephen Owens, and the Hagerty Spirit of the Rally was awarded to Bernard Watkins/Adam Roper as they replaced the clutch on their Mini during the Saturday evening scrutineering and documentation formalities and then finished 11th overall!
