Round 3 of the 2017 Hagerty Insurance Clubmans Road Rally Championship, The Ilkley Jubilee took place in beautiful sunny North Yorkshire on Sunday 9th April and was won by the outstanding pairing of Matt Warren and Andy Pullan in “that seemingly unbeatable red Escort”, although second place crew Ian Crammond and Matthew Vokes gave them a good run for their money. The event was acclaimed by all the crews for being a very good balance of tests, navigation, speed changes and overall timing which must be very heartening for Clerk of the Course, Henry Carr, and all the team at Ilkley and District Motor Club. It is obvious the 20 plus years of organising experience has been put to good use.
The event was not without its controversy though, as a difficult to “spot” white loop in
99/GS2369 with spot height 114 caught out all but 8 of the finishers in the plot’n bash Regularity after lunch, but after much toing and froing the penalties stuck, and rightfully so.
This meant that the new championship leaders, having gained four points on James Griffiths /James Howell, Mini 1275GT, are now Martin Neal/Richard Dix in their mk1 Escort Mexico on 151 points. I think this was particularly pleasing for Richard as he managed to find the elusive spot height on the white loop with his “mature eyes” while plotting and bashing on the road, thus proving it was possible for all to find. Others who managed to find it correctly included Brian & Janette Dwelly in the Experts class and newcomers Andre Scruton & David Irwin for the Novices
The Hagerty Spirit of the Rally award was presented to Andrew Buzzard and Robb Lyne who stopped to tow out fellow competitors James Griffiths and James Howell when they slipped off the tarmac on the approach to the very popular final special test at Scargill Reservoir, while The Amazon Cars Challenge Cup went to Ian Crammond, but as this is his second time of winning it will now go to the next top finisher. The current leader is Stephen Owens in his Porsche 911.
An excellent performance by Nick Pullan and Ian Canavan gained them 3rd overall so if they keep this level of performance going there will be no excuse for them to remain as Experts!
