HRCR dambusters at Scammonden

Four cars took part on this the fifth round of the Moran Motorhomes HRCR Speed Championship and the first Hill Climb of the season promoted by the North West region of the MG Car Club.

The dam, built in the 1970’s as a part of the M62 construction provides a service road that is very challenging with good lines being the order of the day allowing the power to be applied throughout the bends without wild wheel spinning.

Pete Barlow was enjoying the challenge in his mini despite having been on the grass twice and having one run lacking his usual spark when the coil lead came off!

That is one bonus of the venue they keep running the hill – this event having two practice and six timed runs, good value compared to other events and it did give Pete the opportunity of recording a best time of 28.10.

Damon Green in his mighty Volvo 122S was lacking power especially on the last section which is pure power and grip to the finish line but he did enough to keep the Barlow mini at bay with a fastest time of 27.17 and the fastest of the HRCR runners.

Peter Houghton in his road going mini was also enjoying the event but wishing for more power towards the end of the climb commenting about the importance of not spinning the wheels in the corners as it’s more difficult to find grip – even so he took full advantage of the organisers efforts in competing in all runs on offer to record a best time of 31.8.

Phil Mould in the MGB was on his second visit to the venue and agreed that it is a very technical hill adding that it may be short but every bend needs a different approach and that a bit more power would be handy on the final section! Phil just pipping the Houghton mini with a 31.69 after his six runs.

HRCR Chairman, Paul Loveridge was on hand to witness the series’ first visit to Scammonden in this new look championship and wished all well for the next round.

Next up is the double header and closed road event on the inner ring road at Coventry promoted by BARC Midlands on June 1st & 2nd and if last year is anything to go by then we’re in for another treat.

Worth a visit even if you’re not competing – see you there.
