Essex 100 Rally - Sat 29th March 2008
The HRCR 100 series of novice-oriented regularity rallies continued its successful run on March 29 with the staging of the Essex 100 Rally. Like the Kent and Yorkshire equivalents entries were aplenty and 12 crews assembled at Ray Crowther's home to tackle four regularities in mid-Essex.
Essex is not known as a county for interesting roads but the 100-mile route - all within an eight-mile radius of Witham - used just about every quiet yellow in the area.
Keeping the navigation straightforward is a theme of the "100s" so that crews can hone their timing skills and regularity 1 used a tulip road book to guide competitors northwards to Marks Hall Arboretum for a mid-morning break. A Jogularity took crews to lunch at tea-rooms just outside Hatfield Peverel. Keeping west of Maldon a marked map led to an afternoon halt at a Jaguar specialist, whose showroom of prestige cars was outstanding in numbers and value. For the last regularity, a plot of gridlines and spot heights was required which looped crews around the Totham villages before heading back to Tolleshunt Major for "Crow" hospitality, results and awards.
Andy Jess and Richard Learner in their Sunbeam Alpine took victory having led from start to finish. Malcolm Jones/Richard Dresner (Aston Martin DB4) took second with Keith Edwards/Alan Richardson (Rover P6B) third.
One interesting point from the day: Priscilla and Jo Llewelyn in their red MGA had a fraught Essex 100 and just made the finish within OTL; but there was no stopping them in the post-rally treasure hunt on foot when they emerged as clear winners with a perfect score and took home the treasure!
