Don't Buy the Wrong Tripmeter!

To minimise your penalties on regularity sections, you'll need to fit an additional tripmeter in your historic rally car. Many historic rally organisers will only allow the use of additional tripmeters that are period mechanical instruments. These mechanical tripmeters include the Halda Twinmaster, Halda Tripmaster, Halda Speedpilot, Aifab Gemini and Aifab Dual Compact.

Due to the inflated prices of mechanical tripmeters (now over £1000 for a Halda Twinmaster), the HRCR does permit the use of some basic electronic tripmeter models in the Clubmans Rally Championship.

Permitted electronic tripmeters are specifically those that will only display distance and will not display any form of speed. The following models are all acceptable to the HRCR and can be purchased for reasonable prices:

Some popular tripmeters which are NOT permitted, due to the fact that they can display speed, are as follows:

The Terratrip 202 Plus 'Classic' looks identical to the Terratrip 202 Plus, but has had the speed display function disabled in its internal software. The Terratrip 202 is the old model that was superceded by the 202 Plus.

The Retrotrip 2 has the distinct advantage that for some events run by other organisations it is the only non-mechanical tripmeter that is permitted. However it has a few negative points: It is noisy, the numbers are small, you cannot manipulate the mileage display (preset, freeze or reverse) and the calibration setting display is on the bottom of the instrument so can only be seen by a contortionist or by using a mirror!
