TR Challenge and Mini 50 Cup. Cambrian Report and Final Championship Positions

Gwilym Roberts/Lowri Davis win Category 1 Historics while Andrew O'Hanlon/Emma Roberts take second and 1st TR Enterprises/Mini 50 Cup.

Both championships went down to the wire and after five fast and furious stages through Clocaenog and Penmachno it was the one litre Cooper S of Ken Pryce who became TR Enterprises HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge champion driver beating the similar machine of Gordon Cameron by 3 seconds. Champion Co-driver went to Gordon's partner Shelia Grimshaw.  Mini 50 Cup victory went to the ever improving Category 2 Mini of Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird.

Crews started from the Cenotaph on the sea front in Llandudno and finished in bright sunshine at the same location. A forty mile run out took competitors to five miles in Clocaenog East followed by eight and a half miles through Clocaenog Main 1. Service was then taken on the closed B road at Brenig. Then followed Penmachno South and North, another service before finishing with a 16 mile run through Clocaenog Main 2. Total stage mileage for the day being almost 45.

Long time supporter of the Challenge, Clive King/Bob Ward's Cooper S looked spectacular through SS1 and recorded a time of 6.46 with Roberts/Davis (Lotus Cortina) on 7.02 and the Volvo Amazon of Graham Waite/Mike Reynolds posting 7.03. Further down the list Pryce set a time 9 seconds faster than Cameron. Waite was to retire on SS4 with a blown engine.

Although Clive King completed all stages and made it to the finish he was deemed OTL after gently rolling on SS4 but not before speeding through SS2 and increasing his lead over the remaining field by some 30 seconds.

Kent based Mini crew of Jason and Hugh Thompson's pace has been steadily improving throughout the year but a fine run came to a premature end in SS4 with a broken rotor arm which was not diagnosed until they were OTL. The pleasure expressed by Graham Goodall and Peter Gilbert in peddling their Big Healey through forestry stages set the scene for the sunny Llandudno finish.

The final long run through Clocaenog saw the Roberts/Davis Cortina quickest on 20.35 but only beating the rapid Cooper S of O'Hanlon/Roberts by 5 seconds. Peter Williams/ Alan Jones Cooper was next on 21.21 with championship contenders all very close with Cameron recording 21.23, Kendrick 21.29, and Pryce 21.30.

There was a final scare for Anton Bird when running short on fuel he wrong slotted from the filling station on the way to the finish and consequently came close to going OTL.

The Cambrian had attracted a full entry of 180 cars (historics and moderns) and the North Wales Car Club had provided a fitting finale for both HRCR championships.

TR Enterprises HRCR Historic Rally Challenge incorporating the Mini 50 Cup

Gordon Cameron/Shelia Grimshaw win Challenge and Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird are victors in the Mini 50 Cup.

Gordon Cameron/Shelia Grimshaw driving Gordon's 970 S took their first win of 2009 on the Trackrod Historic Challenge based at Pickering Showground. The Mini Magazine supported Mini 50 Cup went to the Category 2 1275cc car of Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird. Henry Hardiment took his best result of the season as runner up in the TR Enterprises Challenge. The Healey 3000 of Graham Goodall/Peter Gilbert rode the bumps of the North Yorkshire Dalby complex well and was the remaining finisher on a day that retirements eliminated many of the leading Challenge contenders.

The event ran alongside the Trackrod Historic Cup of the British Historic Rally Championship and utilised the high speed stages of Dalby, Gale Rig, Cropton and Langdale with service and a spectator stage at the Showground. Crews returned to the finish by 2pm when awards were presented by host John Horton on the finish ramp.

First to go out, after a very rapid run through SS1 was the Mini crew of Clive King/Bob Ward with a broken driveshaft. A similar fate befell the Cooper S of Andrew O'Hanlon/Emma Roberts after SS2. The Volvo Amazon of Graham Waite/Gill Cotton was stopped in Cropton with a broken bottom pulley.

The Trackrod result has left both the Challenge and Mini 50 Cup wide open. All will be decided in North Wales in mid October on the Cambrian Rally.

Fifth Round Report - Neath Valley Historic Stages

TR Enterprises HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge

Incorporating the Mini 50 Cup.

Clive King/Bob Ward dominate.

Competitors overcame atrocious conditions on Saturdays Get Connected Neath Valley Historic Stages where continuous driving rain made the South Wales Stages extremely challenging. King/ Ward set a blistering pace to take victory in the Challenge and Mini 50 Cup by one and a half minutes from the similar Cooper S of Andrew O'Hanlon and Emma Roberts who kept the pressure on Clive King throughout the day.

King also won Category 1 overall with David Stokes/Guy Weaver (Ford Escort RS1600) winning Post Historic and Mark Sollaway/Ashley Trimble (Ford Escort RS1800) taking victory in Category 3 for Classic Rally Cars.

Clerk of the Course Den Golding laid on three classic Rally Wales GB stages totalling 35 miles and incorporating two runs each through Walters Arena, Rhondda and Pelenna. The rally also being based at Walters.

The rapid Volvo Amazon of Forest of Dean driver Graham Waite (Co-Driven by Gill Cotton) was quickest of the Challenge competitors through the first two opening stages but was beaten by both King and O'Hanlon on the first run through Pelenna. Back at service Wait retired with rear axle problems. During the afternoon runs the Minis of King/O'Hanlon/Davis were constantly in the top ten stage times and therefore ahead of many of the Category 2 & 3 cars!

Gordon Cameron/Shelia Grimshaw showed their usual blistering pace in Gordon's 970 S to come home in 5th position in the Cup. Graham Goodall/Pete Gilbert were revelling in the wet conditions their Healey 3000 not missing a beat all day and finishing fourth in the Challenge. The Kent father and son Mini crew of Jason and Hugh Thompson were enjoying their best run of the year so far. Tarmac specialist and Mini 50 Cup points leader Ken Pryce was making a rare appearance on gravel in order to maintain his position in the championship. Henry Hardiment was satisfied with his sixth place in the Cup this time with Lotus Cortina pilot Keith Petitt in the co-driver's seat.

TR Enterprises Challenge/Mini 50 Cup. Rally of The Midlands - Report and Points Tables

Competitors at the MIRA arrival control Competitors at the MIRA arrival control

Ken Pryce/Jenny Evans are victorious.

The Category 1 Class of the ROTM was won by Ken Pryce and Jenny Evans in their rare 970cc Cooper S. Pryce also won the Mini 50 Cup class, the crew having finished almost 10minutes ahead of second placed Category 2 Mini of Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird with the Clubman of Eric Davis/Russell Joseph just 9 seconds behind in third place. It was a day of attrition for the remaining entry with ... historics all retiring with mechanical problems. Two non-challenge cars were first and second overall with Richard Jackson's Porsche 911 taking the top spot and former Challenge supporter Peter Lewis/Stuart Cardell in Peter's 1500cc Anglia came in runners up. The new pairing of Forest of Dean residents Nigel Dutton/Matthew Davis were a welcomed addition to the entry.

Streetly Motor Club under the guidance of Clerk of the Course Richard Hinton provided eight stages all in close proximity to the Hinckley/Nuneaton area. Cars left the Greene King Football Stadium outside Hinckley just before 10.00am and travelled the short distance to the fifteen and a half miles of the MIRA proving ground named Higham by the organisers. The purpose built water splash proved to be the undoing of many including maximums for Eric Davis and Paul Kendrick when both cars drowned out in the deep water. Nigel Dutson damaged a front wing but continued. Blue smoke was seen pouring from the Healey 3000 of Graham Goodall/Pete Gilbert and unfortunately the car did not make it to the finish of the stage. The Cooper S of front runner Andrew O'Hanlon/Emma Roberts suffered major gearbox problems and retired at the end of the stage. Meanwhile the remaining entry made it to the end of this challenging venue.

Fastest here on 16:51 was the rapid and immaculately prepared eight port Clubman of Steve Loveridge/Graham Ford. Loveridge having rebuilt the car following a major off on Eypnt more than two years ago.   Clive King/Bob Ward (Cooper S) was also quick and recorded 17.14 with Jackson's 911 on 17:29. Pryce/Evan's one litre S was only just over a minute behind the Porsche.

Stages 2 & 3 were two runs at the 2.3miles of Bramcote Barracks. Loveridge was quickest on both runs but first time through Davis was only a second adrift and King a further second.

Mallory Park provided stages 5 & 6. Clive King flew off the start line but within yards the engine sounded very sick and by the end of stage 5 Clive had retired with manifold problems. Steve Loveridge was again fastest on both stages but with Richard Jackson and Paul Kendrick in close attendance.

A return to Higham in the afternoon proved less eventful although the Cooper S of Nigel and Stuart Hart retired with gearbox problems. The leading crew of Loveridge/Ford were now coasting to what seemed to be victory but were to suffer wheel problems on the road section leading to the final two short stately home stages at Merevale. A bitterly disappointed Steve Loveridge had no option but to retire on the spot. This handed victory to the Porsche of Jackson/Wide with second place going to the Lewis/Cardell Anglia. It was a very happy Ken Price/Jenny Evans who took third overall in the rally but finished first in the TR Enterprises Challenge and first in the Mini Magazine Mini 50 Cup.

Third Round Report: RDP Welsh Historic Rally

TR Enterprises HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge

Incorporating the Mini 50 Cup.

Clive King/Bob Ward dominant.

The Category 1 Class on Sundays RDP Welsh Historic Rally was won by the Cooper S of Dudley crew Clive King/Bob Ward. This pairing also took maximum points in the TR Enterprises Challenge and the Mini 50 Cup. The Category 2 Cooper S of Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird was runners up in the Mini 50 Cup some two and a half minutes in arrears. Andrew O'Hanlon/Emma Roberts took second in the Challenge and third in the Cup.

Clerk of the Course Geoff Field had planned on a demanding route of 85 miles across the demanding tarmac of the Eypnt Ranges. The final and thirteenth stage totalled over twenty miles in length and ran from the Drovers end of the New Road via the Cilieni Track/Burma Road/Dixie's/The Steps to finish on the Rifle Range road near to the entrance of Mabioin Forest.

SS2 was cancelled for the Historic runners following a severe inversion by a Sunbeam running in the modern rally car section.

The Healey 3000 of Graham Goodall/Pete Gilbert were fifth in the Challenge but were slowed by an intermittent misfire. However removal of the air cleaners did partially solve this problem.

Kendrick/Bird kept Clive King in their sights all day and was always ready to pounce should the leader make a mistake or incur a puncture. They found the pace of their Mini somewhat slower than their previous mount - a Lotus Sunbeam! Andrew O'Hanlon's pace quickened as the day progressed when he became more confident in Emma Roberts accurate note calling. Ken Price/Jenny Evans kept in close company with the larger capacity Minis in their 970cc (Class B1) Cooper S.

King/Ward had a heart stopping moment when a suspected head gasket failure caused the car to falter on the road section between final service and the finish in Brecon. The crew however coaxed the engine into life sufficient to reach the final control and record a dominant victory.

Get It Sideways Stages

Andrew O'Hanlon/Alex Luckling Andrew O'Hanlon/Alex Luckling

Davis/Davis and O'Hanlon/Lucking -All Winners.

The father and son crew of Eric and Matthew Davis won the second round of the  Mini 50 Cup in their Mini 1275 GT with Andrew O'Hanlon/Alex Lucking's Cooper S securing victory in the TR Enterprises  Historic Stage Rally Challenge overall.

A total of ten historic Minis gathered to compete in Cheltenham Motor Clubs - Get It Sideways Stages based at Down Ampney airfield near Cirencester. The entry also attracted Challenge leader Graham Waite/Mike Reynolds in his rapid Volvo Amazon, the Healey 3000 of Graham Goodall /Pete Gilbert and the Cortina Lotus of Keith Pettitt/Bernard Baker.

Competitors were treated to ten special stages on the former WW2 airfield. A nice touch from the organisers was to seed the Mini 50 Cup competitors from 50 to 59! - this being the 50th anniversary year of the Mini.

The damp conditions on the first two stages caught many crews with Keith Pettitt's Cortina losing a minute on stage one with an off and Nigel and Stuart Hart severely damaging the nearside wing and suspension of their Cooper S. Feverored work by the service crew (and a driveshaft provided by Clive King) succeeded in allowing the crew to continue to the finish (although not classed as finishers) and collect The Spirit of the Rally award.  Cooper S regulars, Clive King/Bob Ward used their forest tyres to good effect and where fastest for much of the day although closely followed by O'Hanlon and Davis. Eric and Matthew Davis had a monumental spin early in the event but became smoother and quicker as the day progressed.

The long straights allowed Graham Goodall's Healey to show its considerable speed as it was seen to pull away from more modern machinery. O'Hanlon and King both caught and overtook cars during these early stages. The Cooper S's of Peter Horsburgh/Graham Carter and Ken Pryce/Jenny Evans were quick all day but Horsburgh lost a minute with a spin into the bushes. Waite's Volvo started to give notice of mechanical failure on stage 4 which prompted Graham to head for home. After a strong run, the Mini of Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird suffered transmission problems and retired. Henry Hardiment/Ewan Adams brought their Cooper S all of the way from Norfolk only to suffer ignition and probable head gasket problems which forced them into retirement after two stages.

On the penultimate stage O'Hanlon suffered a broken driveshaft but made it to the finish of the stage and replaced the offending item (this time provided by Eric Davis's crew) and carried on to complete the final and tenth stage.

Whilst still leading Clive King was bitterly disappointed to suffer a broken crank at the start control of stage 9. Jason and Hugh Thompson's Mini had been without first and reverse gears for most of the day and later third gear went missing. These problems did not diminish their enthusiasm and they were content to finish and plan to repair the car for future rounds.

O'Hanlon/Lucking took their first win in the TR Enterprises HRCR Historic Rally Challenge. On his first ever rally Matthew Davis's smile is likely to last at least another week. He and father Eric have now closed the gap in the Mini 50 Cup supported by Mini Magazine  with a well deserved win.

2009 Historic Stage Rally Challenge and Mini 50 Cup unveiled

News from the HRCR

Press release: Wednesday, 12 November 2008

The HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge, supported by TR Enterprises, will be back with an extended range of events in 2009. The series, new for 2008, proved an immediate hit as Ford Anglias, Austin Healeys, Mini Coopers and Lotus Cortinas took to the stages.

In addition, a special Mini 50 Cup will be run alongside the Historic Challenge next season in a bid to get more Minis back into action to mark the 50th anniversary of the model. The Mini remains one of the most iconic rally cars of the 1960s, but the number of cars active in stage rallying has dwindled in recent times.

The two series will share the same eight rallies, but will be distinct championships. While the Historic Challenge continues to focus on the category 1 cars (pre '68), the Mini 50 Cup will span all three categories, so that cars from up to 1981 could be in action. Only the category 1 Minis will be able to score points in both series, although no one crew will be able to win both titles.

Conceived by the Historic Rally Car Register, with the support of club president and Mini rallying legend Paddy Hopkirk, the Mini 50 Cup will run over the same eight events as the HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge.

"All the Minis have disappeared," said Clive King, one of the people behind the idea and a Mini rally driver since 1984. "They just need a bit of encouragement to get back out. Everyone knows what a Mini is and this is a fantastic thing to do."

"We want to try and get as many Minis back onto the stages as possible," said Paul Loveridge of the HRCR. "We've already had a lot of interest from potential competitors; we could have over 15 cars out on some event." Dunlop and Revolution Wheels have pledged trade support.

Minis from all historic periods, running up to 1981, will compete in three capacity classes; up to 1000cc, 1001-1300cc and over 1301cc as well as all eight-port engined cars. Current estimates are that as many as 50 classic Minis are stage-rally prepared.

The eight-event calendar will cover four gravel rallies and four asphalt events, starting with the Red Kite Historic Stages on Sunday 18 January.

The provisional 2009 dates are:

1 January 18, The Red Kite Stages, Wales (gravel)

2 March 14/15, The Robin Hood Stages, Nottinghamshire (gravel)

3 April 18, Get it Sideways Stages, Down Ampney (sealed)

4 May 3, The Welsh Rally, Epynt (asphalt)

5 May 25, Millbrook Stages (asphalt)

6 June 20, Rally of the Midlands (asphalt)

7 August 15, Neath Valley Stages, Wales (gravel)

8 September 26, Trackrod Rally Yorkshire (gravel)

The co-ordinator of the Historic Stage Rally Challenge is Steve Suckling, who can be contacted by e-mail at: steve@hrcr.co.uk
