New look for 2008

The HRCR has announced two new initiatives that between them will bring a new expanded approach for those who venture out after dark.

The championship format has been shaken up and the Maxsport Historic Rally Championship will now contain a mix of full-weekend, night and daytime events. This will remain open to cars from Categories 1, 2 and 3, although the first three overall awards - including the Maxsport Trophies are only open to cars from Category 1, ie pre-1968. Later cars compete for their own class awards and a significant trophy is expected for that too.

Alongside this will be the HRCR Silver Jubilee Challenge that will enable competitors in cars of all categories to claim points for virtually any night-based road rally to which HRCR members are invited.

The Maxsport Historic Rally Championship includes night, day and full-weekend events. These cover a wide seasonal and geographic spread and are tried and tested events of a high standard. Competitors need to register as now and pay a registration fee. They would also be expected to comply with relevant technical regulations. The best seven scores would count, obliging successful crews to contest at least two of the three disciplines. It would be possible to get seven scores without entering the more expensive full-weekenders. Southern crews would need just two 'northern forays' and vice-versa. Rounds are listed elsewhere on this site.

The HRCR Silver Jubilee Challenge enables competitors to claim their own points from any National B or Clubmans historic permit (or mixed permit) event to which HRCR is invited. Because HRCR is affiliated to several regional associations and to the NESCRO group this covers at least 40 events in the UK alone. Although primarily aimed at UK crews it could be viable in Ireland or beyond. A points scoring system will count up to the best eight scores and takes account of the size of the historic entry, so that say coming third from an historic field of 17 scores higher than second out of just five. It is hoped to use the Members' Area of the HRCR website to alert crews to potentially suitable events.

The HRCR Silver Jubilee Challenge is open to cars of all historic age categories complying with MSA or equivalent regulations and satisfying the event scrutineer. Simple baseline standards will be defined, broadly in line with those used by NESCRO and the northern associations. To win an overall award UK crews would need to include within their claims at least two events from the Maxsport Championship to reduce the risk of the top crews never meeting 'head to head'. Class awards would not have that requirement. Registered Maxsport competitors would also be able to gain Silver Jubilee points on the full-weekend and night rounds of their championship.

Road rallying, and particularly night rallying, is regarded as a budget form of motorsport. However in these days of the £1 litre we are finding that the cost of travel to and from events is often exceeding the combined cost of entry fees and on-event fuel. We looked at how we could provide a high-profile championship with top-flight events yet also cater for those with more limited time and budgets. There are many night rally competitors out there who are keen supporters of their own regional championships but who get little wider recognition. The Silver Jubilee Challenge enables them to compete against others in a similar position but perhaps at the other end of the country. It will also illustrate the wealth of historic events and competitors that are out there. HRCR recognises that some parts of the country apply differing interpretations of the Blue Book's eligibility rules. The Challenge seeks to accommodate this with a simple (and hopefully not contentious) baseline that can apply everywhere, even beyond the UK.
