2009 Maxsport Championship launched - 10 tough night events

2008 Maxsport Champion - Jon Wood - on the Carpetbagger 2008 Maxsport Champion - Jon Wood - on the Carpetbagger

The 2009 Maxsport Historic Rally Championship is reverting to the 'night events only' formula that proved popular in 2005, 2006 and 2007. We are returning with a no-holds-barred series of ten of the toughest night events in the calendar spread through the year but also covering the classic rallying terrain. In order to get some of the best Welsh Border events we have taken the decision to broaden the championship from just those which hold an historic permit.

The number of cars that previously needed to exploit the technical exemptions provided by an historic permit had tailed away to zero and all of our current and known prospective competitors now have cars that will satisfy 'modern' road rally regulations. Six of our events will have an historic permit, so if you have a pre-68 car with 6 cylinders or with twin 40's then you will still be welcome on those six, but definitely not on the remaining four rounds. We consider this a worthwhile trade-off to give our regular crews the quality of competition that they deserve.

The nature of these events calls for a modest level of experience and newcomers to the sport would be advised to first consider the Richard Egger Clubmans Championship until they have acquired the map and clock skills needed. We see the Maxsport Championship as something to test even the most experienced crews or those wanting to move to road rallying from other disciplines. For many it will bring back memories of a 'Golden Era' when road rallying was at the pinnacle of the sport. Times have moved on but we can still promise fierce but friendly competition, whilst keeping much of the atmosphere from the 70's and 80's. The atmosphere at Welshpool Cattle Mart on the Breidden or at Corwen at the start of the PK will remind many of Newcastle Emlyn in the heyday of the Cilwendeg.

Technical regs have been simplified (Blue Book only) and classes reflect crew experience only. Awards are also given for best pre-60, best pre-68, best all-rounder and best mixed crew.

Regulations, registration forms and event details are accessible from the website links below. Further details can be obtained from Stan Appleton, stan@hrcr.co.uk. Photos by M&H Andy Manston

The Silver Jubilee Challenge will not be run in 2009; the website material has been archived, accessible via the Maxsport website.
