Neath Valley Stages

‘Full house' - all seven of our registered starters finished. The event was round 6 of the series and comprised of two loops of three stages based at Walters Arena. 5 minis, a TR4 and a new crew in a Lotus Cortina joined the 14 other crews in the Historic event.
Despite Clive King/Bob Ward, (Cooper S) being quickest on SS1 by 7 seconds, a storming run through SS3, Rheola, by Simon Wallis/Graham Wride, (Lotus Cortina), overhauled King/Ward to lead by 11 seconds at 1st service. These two had opened up a sizable gap to the rest of the field. John Brooks with stand in co-driver Derrick Ramsdell (Cooper S) had only a 1 second lead over Eric Davis/Russell Joseph (Clubman GT) with Jason/HughThompson (Cooper S) now over ½ minute adrift. Nigel Dutson/Matthew Davies (Clubman GT) held 6th and Nigel Allcock/Tim Curren, still running on the old engine in the TR4 (a new one allegedly due for the Trackrod) brought up the rear.
With no one reporting any dramas or problems, the only change to this order by the end was Davis/Joseph who overtook Brooks/Ramsdell,
So the final placings were:- 1st Wallis/Wride - 2nd King/Ward - 3rd Davis/Joseph - 4th Brooks/Ramsdell* - 5th Thompson/Thompson - 6th Dutson/Davis - 7th Allcock/Curren*. (*Not registered.)
Although John Brooks still holds a healthy lead in both the Challenge and Mini Cup he has scored well on all 6 rounds so now has to start dropping scores. He will however be driving to ensure his regular co-driver Phil Harvey stays at the top with him when he returns. Clive King and Bob Ward are rapidly closing in and have a couple of DNFs to drop. Eric Davis and Russell Joseph also have a couple of no/low scores to drop as well. The addition of the Wallis/Wride in the Lotus Cortina could affect the positions in the Challenge if they continue to score good points.
Full report in the next issue of Old Stager.

Quinton Stages
King/Ward on their way to victory. Courtesy of KPB Photogrphy
For the first time this year we can say all our contenders who started the event, finished. Sounds good, but maybe as only 3 started the Quinton Stages, the 5th round of the series, any loses would have been significant.
The event comprised of 7 stages of the forests around the Epynt military ranges with central servicing which meant the road mileage was kept to a minimum.
Our three Minis made up a 7 crew field of historic competitors running between the 1400cc and the Open series of the BTRDA event.
Clive King, back with his regular co-driver Bob ‘Wheel Nuts' Ward In their Cooper S set the pace over the opening loop of stages to hold over a minute lead over current Championship and Mini Cup leaders John Brooks/Phil Harvey in their Coopers S. Jason/Hugh Thompson, not having too many finishes recently where taking a while to get back to some sort of pace but steadily got closer to the other two over the day. This was the order they finished the day.
It was a day without dramas although King/Ward were getting through tyres at a great rate of knots.
Brooks/Harvey consolidated their positions at the top of the Challenge and Mini Cup, but with Eric Davis and Russell Joseph missing, King and Ward moved into 2nd position.
A full report will appear in the next Old Stager.

Rally of the Midlands

THEN THERE WERE TWO!!
4 Minis, a Cortina and a TR4 started the Rally of the Midlands, the 4th round of the Challenge and Mini Cup. The 7 short stages on the Friday night saw the Mini Cup leaders Eric Davis/Russell Joseph retire on SS6 with a seriously ‘blown' engine in their Mini Clubman GT. Jason & Hugh Thompson had ‘fuel problems' in their Mini Cooper S after SS4. This left Clive King and late replacement co-driver Paul Kendrick* leading overnight but with a suspected head gasket problem. SS10, the first visit to the 14 miles stage at MIRA saw their ultimate demise. Dave Keen/Brian Cammack* in the Cortina also left us at the end of SS10 with a fuel pump problem.
This left John Brooks/Phil Harvey, the last Mini standing, but also suffering a curious misfire, to coax the car to the finish and take top position in both the Challenge and Mini Cup. The only other finisher was Nigel Allcock/Tim Curran* in the TR4 but even they were suffering a misfire at low revs. A full report appears in the next issue of Old Stager.
The next round is the Quinton Stages on Sat 10th July - how many will appear for this!!

Welsh Rally 2010
Clive King/Bob Ward on a charge! courtesy of KPB Photography
A small entry of 5 Minis lined up for the start of the RDP Welsh Rally over the military ranges of Epynt. 13 stages were on offer giving approx 80 stage miles. The first and longest stage, nearly 20 miles, unfortunately saw the demise of Jason & Hugh Thompson with gearbox problems. Also Clive King/Bob Ward stopped 3 times to sort out clutch problems. Mini Cup leaders Eric Davis/Russell Joseph had a trouble free run and opened up a lead over Andrew O'Hanlon/Emma Roberts which they kept until the end. John Brooks/Phil Harvey, leaders in the HRCR Challenge suffered loss of power on three stages dropping them to the back off the field. King/Ward, set about trying to get back the time they lost, but despite being fastest on every other stage left themselves too much to do.
The penultimate stage saw O'Hanlon/Roberts drop a wheel off the side of the road which then escalated into a a dramatic high speed multiroll. Following a visit to hospital in an Air Ambulance we are pleased to report that apart from being badly battered and bruised, they are both OK. We wish them both a speedy recovery. Unfortunately the car is not looking too good.
Final positions were Davis/Joseph 1st, King/Ward 2nd and Brooks/Harvey 3rd these being the only finishers. Although Davis/Joseph scored their 3rd overall win, due to a regulation about single class entries, Brooks/Harvey have closed to within 2 points in the Mini Cup and also continue to lead the Challenge. But King/Ward scored good points which means they are now coming into the reckoning.

Get it Sideways Stages 2010
Nigel Allcock & Tim Curran (Photo courtesy of KPB Photography
9 crews started the Cheltenham MC event at Down Ampney, 7 Minis, one Cortina and new to the series a TR4. A dry dusty day saw 4 crews - 3 minis and the Cortina out by the end of SS3. Fears that we might not get any finishers were unfounded as the remaining 5 all got round. Eric Davis and Russell Joseph extended their lead in the Mini Cup, in their 'new' black and yellow Clubman GT. Adrian Kermode and Maurice Beckett in their Cooper S got good points by finishing second and John Brooks and Phil Harvey take over the lead in the Challenge with a steady but improving run to finish third in their 998 Mini Cooper. Nigel Dutson and Matthew Davis in their Clubman GT survived a long stop with a lead off to finish 4th and Nigel Allcock and non registered Tim Curran struggled with a slipping clutch to bring their TR4 home on its first event.

Jason and Hugh Thomson in their Cooper S who were getting to grips with notes for the first time had a steady run with their reward being third overall. The only non-Mini was Dave Keen/Keith Hounslow in their Cortina GT who also had relatively trouble free run and spent the day swapping times with the Thompsons finally loosing out by only 25 seconds. Nigel Dutson/Matthew Davis in their Mini 1275 GT dropped time on SS4 dropping them to 5th overall and John Brookes in their 998 Mini Cooper got ‘beached' on a rock on SS3 for over two minutes and then lost their wipers for the next stage. Rounding off the entry was Gordon Cameron/Sheila Grimshaw who unfortunately retired on Stage 1 with Gearbox failure.
A good start to the season, we now need to build on this and try an attract a few more crews to join us. A full report will appear in the next issue of Old Stager.

Brian who was looking forward to a quieter life says "Who can not succumb to the charms of Paul Loveridge, when obviously having got to the bottom of the barrel of who to ask to do the job, made the now famous phone call which opens with - How are you Brian? Call me sceptic but I think 'what's coming next? Having painted a glossy picture and getting me to finally say yes he then hits me with all the things to do before the start of the new season."
Right an update on where we are now, draft regs done and permit application with MSA, last minute tweeks to the arrangements with the various event organisers - the final list should be on the site by Christmas Day.
