Mini Forest Tyres
As most of you are aware there has been difficulty in obtaining 10" forest tyres for Minis with there being none in the country when contenders tried to obtain some in October.
Clive King & Paul Price have together done a deal to secure suitable Forest Tyres for Cat 1 Minis from Kingpin Remoulds. They are having 100 made in 2 compounds, hard & soft in one size 145-10. These will have proper forest tread patterns and should be available from mid January 2012. They will be made on new carcasses and you will be able to re-use the tyres when worn out, making this a ‘green' tyre. Clive and Paul are funding this venture themselves, at great expense. The tyres will be available for 2012 Mini Cup registered contenders at cost, currently about £62 each or around £72 for non registered people.

Astran on board for 2012

The Historic Rally Car Register is pleased to announce the the HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge and Mini Cup 2012 will again be supported by Astran Cargo Services Ltd of Maidstone in Kent. The series is specifically designed for Category 1 (pre 1968) cars and Minis up to the end of 1981. The events are a mix of rounds from the previous series and some carefully chosen ones that form part of the MSA British Historic Rally Championship.
Hugh Thompson, Director of Astran and regular contender in the series says "We are very happy to support this series of competitive closed-road and forestry events. They really echo the good old days, when everyone helped each other to achieve a result. And the spectators just love seeing the older cars being driven in anger! HRCR is to be congratulated in keeping this opportunity open for the true enthusiasts."
Brian Thomas, the series co-ordinator says " We are extremely grateful to Hugh and his company for their support which enables the series to continue in these difficult financial times and we look forward to working together with Astran Cargo Services Ltd throughout the year."

Challenge/Mini Cup Plans for 2012
Due to falling entries and the current financial climate the organisers of the HRCR Historic Stage Rally Challenge and Mini Cup were left with the difficult choice of dropping the series or reorganising it to try and make it more cost effective and appealing. For 2012 it has been decided to reduce the number of rounds from 8 to 6. These will be carefully selected rounds which form part of the British Historic Stage Rally Championship (BHRC), - plus several of the better supported non-BHRC rounds which have previously been part of the Challenge and Mini Cup. The events will still be an equal mix of Gravel and Asphalt with reduced mileage and the minimum amount of second usage on gravel events where possible.
The Provisional Calendar will be:-
Rallye Sunseeker - Gravel - 25th Feb.
Get it Sideways (Down Ampney). - Asphalt - 21st April.
*Severn Valley Stages. - Gravel - 9th June.
*Swansea Bay. - Gravel. - 30th June.
*Harry Flatters. - Asphalt - 29th July.
*Tour of Flanders. - Asphalt - 7/8th September.
Reserve Gravel Event: Cambrian. 20th October.
Reserve Asphalt Event: TBA
*BHRC EVENTS.
To keep the interest alive for longer the points system will be revised with opportunities to earn additional points via a ‘joker' system on any one of the first 5 rounds. The Tour of Flanders will qualify for additional points as it is a two day event. At the time of writing, categories and classes are being discussed but are unlikely to change dramatically.
Co-ordinator Brian Thomas stated "We recognise the financial problems we all face these days and reducing the number of rounds over a similar period of time will hopefully encourage our regulars and any newcomers to support the series in realistic numbers and for longer Although we will be working more closely with the BHRC, the plan is to still retain the championships own identity with its own permit, regulations, advertising, reporting and awards and hopefully to still have our own sponsors and I will continue to administer the championship in much the same way as I do now.
We are sorry that we have had to drop several events from the current series, all of whom have provided good facilities and competition, but we feel it is done in the best interests of the competitors and the championship"

Cambrian Stages 2011

Following the announcement that the Autumn Rally - the replacement for the Welsh Rally - had been cancelled, it meant that the Cambrian Stages in North Wales would be the 7th and final round of this year's series. Going into the event there were three possible drivers, and two co-drivers who could win the Mini Cup and two drivers up for the HRCR Challenge overall title.
In ‘pole' position in the Mini Cup was Clive King, his co-driver Polly was in second place in the points, 2nd placed driver was Eric Davis with his co-driver Russell Joseph was in 1st place. If one or other failed to finish the other crew would take the championship. If neither crew finished Andrew O'Hanlon could sneak through to take the series. King was also 2nd in the HRCR Challenge behind Graham Goodall in the Healey and could also take first place in that if he won. It was all set for a final shoot-out.
King/Polly set off in attack mode taking over a minute out of their nearest challenger on SS1. Unfortunately SS2 was to be the decider. Halfway through, changing up after a bend the steering wheel was ripped out of Kings hand and they went off down a bank at least a 100 yards off the track. Thankfully neither crew members were hurt, but the car was destroyed. This left Davis/Joseph to have a steady run to take the Mini title and Goodall and his co-driver Peter Gilbert to take the HRCR Challenge. The highest placed registered crew on the day and taking maximum points were son & father team of Jason & Hugh Thompson in their Mini Cooper S. Finishing a creditable second was Andrew O'Hanlon, also in a Mini Cooper, which meant he finished runner up driver in the Mini Cup and wins the class.
It was not the way we wanted the season to end, but as they say that's rallying!!
A full report will appear in the Christmas edition of the Old Stager.

Flanders 2011

A disappointing entry of only two crews joined the BHRC crews to take the start at the Tour of Flanders for the ‘two day' event based in Roselaire. The event was included in the series this year following lobbying by several of last year contenders which was all the more frustrating when only the two entered. However the good news is, that whilst many crews in both the modern and historic events did not finish, both the Mini Cooper of Clive King/Bob Ward and the Austin Healey of Graham Goodall/PeterGilbert recorded finishes.
This means that King goes back to the top of the Mini Cup Points tables and Goodhall/Gilbert maintain a lead in the HRCR Challenge. However with 5 events to count dropped scores will now come into play.
A report on the event will appear in the next issue of the Old Stager.

Neath Valley Stages 2011

The Three Counties Car Club's Neath Valley Stages were the hosts for round 5 of the series. The whole of the event was based in Walters Arena for the first time. Incessant rain resulted in the surface of the stages being described as very ‘claggy'
A disappointing entry of only 5 of our crews started, 3 Minis, an Austin Healey and a TR4.
Clive King, this time with Polly was hoping for a better result following 2 consecutive DNFs Eric Davis/Russell Joseph were in a rebuilt clubman following their heavy impact at Caerwent and Nigel Dutson/Adie Williams also in a Clubman made up the trio of Minis, Graham Goodall/Peter Gilbert were in the Healey and making their first outing in this years series in the TR4 was Nigel Allcock/Tim Curran.
King/Polly dominated from the off, despite loosing wipers on one stage, set fastest times on all 5 stages. Davis/Joseph who were getting use to the new car had to settle for a steady run and finished runners up. Goodall/Gilbert came home 3rd with Allock/Curran finishing 4th despite having to run the last two stages with seriously deranged tracking problems following a heavy impact with an exposed rock. Dutson/Williams suffered a clutch problem on SS2 dropping them well back and left themselves too much to do to improve on a 5th position. To finish at all in such lousy conditions was a major achievement, so it was pleasing to get all the crews home.
This result has got both King and Davis's aspirations back on track with Davis and Joseph now leading in the Mini Cup, King & Polly are now in 3rd & 2nd places respectively. Goodhall/Gilbert consolidated their lead the HRCR Challenge.
With the best 5 scores to count this year crews will start to drop scores but although this was round 5 at present no one has yet registered 5 starts and/or finishes
A full report will appear in the next issue of Old Stager
For the next round we join the BHRC guys in a trip to the asphalt of Flanders in early September.

Midsummer Stages - Caerwent
Andrew O'Hanlon/James Crook survived a day of attrition. Photo courtesy of KPB Photography.
8 crews took the start, 7 Minis and the Austin Healey, including the topcrews in the Mini Cup and Challenge. Following a stoppage on SS1, 6 of our crews were given a ‘notional' time as per the MSA rules.
SS2 was the end for three crews, Nigel Dutson/Melanie Holmes (Mini Clubman) took a diversion off the track which meant they visited a bit more of the venue than planned eventually getting stuck, Fin Mackintosh/Craig Jones's Cooper S shed a wheel with broken wheel studs, both crews eventually got going but were both declared OTL. Worse was to befall Stuart Hart/David Pervcival who rolled their Mini Cooper into a ball also on SS2, but we are pleased to report neither crew members came to any harm.
Things settled down for a while although Clive King/Bob Ward (Cooper S) reported clutch problems throughout, but a loss of oil pressure finally put them out on Stage 6. Andrew O'Hanlon/James Crook took over the lead briefly but then had an off also on SS6 which took them a while to get out but stayed in the event. This handed a lead of nearly a minute to Eric Davis/Russell Joseph (Mini Clubman) going into the final stage. Unfortunately It's never over until its over and a broken steering arm sent Davis/ Joseph careering off the track and straight into the only tree anywhere near this location. The car looked very poorly being manhandled onto the trailer. This meant O'Hanlon/Crook took the win, with the only other two finishers were Ken Pryce/Mark Crisp in their Cooper who have not reported any dramas and Graham Goodhall/Peter Gilbert in the Healey who drove the last two stages with a suspected head gasket problem. In the whole event only 45 finished out of 100 starters so whilst no consolation our retirement rate was no better or worse than the rest.
The last two results have certainly altered the points with Graham Goodall & Peter Gilbert in the Healey taking over the lead in the Challenge and Andrew O'Hanlon and Russell Joseph in the Mini Cup.
We know have a six week break before the Neath Valley Stages, which probably may not be enough to repair the more seriously damaged vehicles.
Full report in next Old Stager.
