Get It Sideways Stages

Davis/Davis and O'Hanlon/Lucking -All Winners.

The father and son crew of Eric and Matthew Davis won the second round of the  Mini 50 Cup in their Mini 1275 GT with Andrew O'Hanlon/Alex Lucking's Cooper S securing victory in the TR Enterprises  Historic Stage Rally Challenge overall.

A total of ten historic Minis gathered to compete in Cheltenham Motor Clubs - Get It Sideways Stages based at Down Ampney airfield near Cirencester. The entry also attracted Challenge leader Graham Waite/Mike Reynolds in his rapid Volvo Amazon, the Healey 3000 of Graham Goodall /Pete Gilbert and the Cortina Lotus of Keith Pettitt/Bernard Baker.

Competitors were treated to ten special stages on the former WW2 airfield. A nice touch from the organisers was to seed the Mini 50 Cup competitors from 50 to 59! - this being the 50th anniversary year of the Mini.

The damp conditions on the first two stages caught many crews with Keith Pettitt's Cortina losing a minute on stage one with an off and Nigel and Stuart Hart severely damaging the nearside wing and suspension of their Cooper S. Feverored work by the service crew (and a driveshaft provided by Clive King) succeeded in allowing the crew to continue to the finish (although not classed as finishers) and collect The Spirit of the Rally award.  Cooper S regulars, Clive King/Bob Ward used their forest tyres to good effect and where fastest for much of the day although closely followed by O'Hanlon and Davis. Eric and Matthew Davis had a monumental spin early in the event but became smoother and quicker as the day progressed.

The long straights allowed Graham Goodall's Healey to show its considerable speed as it was seen to pull away from more modern machinery. O'Hanlon and King both caught and overtook cars during these early stages. The Cooper S's of Peter Horsburgh/Graham Carter and Ken Pryce/Jenny Evans were quick all day but Horsburgh lost a minute with a spin into the bushes. Waite's Volvo started to give notice of mechanical failure on stage 4 which prompted Graham to head for home. After a strong run, the Mini of Paul Kendrick/Anton Bird suffered transmission problems and retired. Henry Hardiment/Ewan Adams brought their Cooper S all of the way from Norfolk only to suffer ignition and probable head gasket problems which forced them into retirement after two stages.

On the penultimate stage O'Hanlon suffered a broken driveshaft but made it to the finish of the stage and replaced the offending item (this time provided by Eric Davis's crew) and carried on to complete the final and tenth stage.

Whilst still leading Clive King was bitterly disappointed to suffer a broken crank at the start control of stage 9. Jason and Hugh Thompson's Mini had been without first and reverse gears for most of the day and later third gear went missing. These problems did not diminish their enthusiasm and they were content to finish and plan to repair the car for future rounds.

O'Hanlon/Lucking took their first win in the TR Enterprises HRCR Historic Rally Challenge. On his first ever rally Matthew Davis's smile is likely to last at least another week. He and father Eric have now closed the gap in the Mini 50 Cup supported by Mini Magazine  with a well deserved win.
