Easylarity in Kent

HRCR members are invited to enter a series of short 12-car regularity rallies organised by the Blackpalfrey Motor Club of Kent, each on a Sunday morning.  From a 10am start, the 60-mile route usually has a half-way coffee stop and finishes in time for lunch at a nice country pub. The format is always simple regularity, suitable for experts and novices, with the route either pre-plotted at home (route plotting instructions emailed with final instructions) or given out on the day in easy 'ready-to-go' format (tulips, jogularity or marked maps).

Dates for the coming months are:

Sunday 13th November 2011
   Sunday 4th December 2011
      Sunday 8th January 2012
         Sunday 12th February 2012
            Sunday 11th March 2012
               Sunday 1st April 2012
                  Sunday 29th April 2012

Metric Services Rally - Sunday 9th October 2011

Loughborough Car Club will be running the third Metric Services Rally in October, retaining the popular and successful novice-friendly style, but with a new name for the format; ‘Easylarity’.

Easylarity is easy regularity – ideal for crews new to daylight road rallies (and also for novices, too!). The event features extremely straightforward navigation with uncomplicated regularity. A perfect introduction to the concept, particularly for those intending to go onto bigger and more complex events.

This year’s event will see a return to the classic roads of High Leicestershire and the beautiful Vale of Belvoir. The number of competitors is limited to a manageable 30.Classic/historic cars pre 1980 are preferred and will get allocated starting places first. But otherwise entries will be strictly allocated by order of receipt.

We will retain the format of:

A mix of daylight regularity on decent roads and tests on grass. All packed into one busy day.

The event will be based at Park Hill Golf Club, near Seagrave and feature four loops in a clover leaf based round the Paddies Lane Field where the Autotest will take place. The route is approximately 100 miles and there will be no rough roads.

Navigation: The first loop will be at a standard set for beginners, the second for novices, and the last a bit more challenging. Tests will be on a large smooth grass field with three different tests laid out. Each time competitors return to the site they will attempt each test. The layouts will not change during the day**. Each test will have no more than one manoeuvre requiring the use of reverse gear. A complimentary breakfast starts the day at the golf club.

There are a couple budget hotels close to the start for those travelling from afar to the event.

The first two events got positive comments all round. So it’s more of the same for 2011 with an enjoyable day promised for absolute beginners, novices and experienced crews.

Successful BBO 100

The BBO 100 ran for the 3rd time in early August with a full entry of 20 cars (and 2 reserves), although aimed at novice crews, it was noticable that most cars one old hand on board. Five Regularity sections were planned and two rest halts, starting in Oxfordshire visiting Buckinghamshire (briefly), Berkshire and even Hampshire.

Navigators had plenty of plotting to think about and had to cope with NAM triangles, secret checks as well as 'Road Closed' signs. Two grass driving tests were also included. A large band of BBO luminaries (to whom thanks are due) were out marshaling at 33 different locations and completed 650 time card entries! Last years winning combination of Mower/Beeson again triumphed this year in a TR3 - but they were the most experienced crew.

1. Terry Mower/Paul Beeson (1954 Triumph TR2) 425
2. John Cotterell/John Broughall (1967 Austin A40) 623
3. Stephen Hall/Duncan Brown (1972 Lotus Elan) 669
4. Helen Scott/David Burton (1968 Morris Minor) 697
5. Anthony Garside/David Holmes (1967 MGB) 701

Kent 100 Rally

Entrants in the HRCR Kent 100 Rally on Saturday 24th July enjoyed a pleasant drive around the Weald of Kent, via four regularity sections and a lunch stop at the Rare Breeds Centre, Woodchurch. With a clear roadbook using tulips, jogularity and marked maps, all cars stayed on the correct route and found all the regularity controls close to their due times. A wrong slot just before lunch by Ken Watts & Tom Ash cost them 70 points but with only 25 points penalty spread over the remaining 12 controls they managed to win by a 5 second margin.

1. Ken Watts/Tom Ash (Volvo Amazon)  95
2. Michael Helm/Colin Wake (Triumph TR6) 100
3. Lee Busbridge/Craig McGurk (Morris Marina) 138
4. Tim Adams/Sue Adams (Mini) 215
5. Richard Jeffcote/Jane Jeffcote (Triumph TR5) 312

The Metric Services Jubilee Rally

Sunday 13th September saw Loughborough Car Club celebrating its 50th year by running a 100 series regularity rally combined with grass Autotests.  16 ‘classic' cars, with an age span of 50 years gathered for bacon butties and signing on at the clubs habitual autotest & gymkhana site "Paddies Lane". A short regularity loop started the event in the classic lanes of North East Leicestershire.  Two subsequent loops including one in the Vale of Belvoir saw another three regularity sections, each to a different format . The Naviation was set for novice crews but the experts were presented with progressively more challenges through the loops.  After each loop, competitors returned to Paddies Lane for three flowing tests on smooth grass.  First overall and first "modern car" was the Lancia Intregale of Neil Lewis and Richard Fisher who consolidated their quick times on grass with a strong performance on the regularities with a full set of code boards.  First true historic was the pairing of Filsell Senior & Junior who threw their MGA round the grass with great panache. The other Father Son pairing of Hooleys, in their Austin Healey 100/4 struggled with excessive use of right pedal causing much wheelspin but little motion.  Missing code boards proved to be the crucial issue for many crews as when these penalties were incorporated into the results many places were interchanged.

Results

1. Neil Lewis / Richard Fisher, Lancia Integrale 1987
2. Neil Chetwynd / Lisa Thornton, Rover  220 GSI 1994
3. Colin Poxon / Mick Worrall, Toyota Starlet 1979
4. Matt Filsell / David Filsell, MGA Roadster 1960
5. Michael Hunter / Paul Darch, Triumph TR4A 1965
6. Tim Greg / Sam Greg, MGB GT 1971
7. Alan Smith / Dick Hall, Morris Minor 1959
8. Robert Spittal / Richard Gould, MGB GT 1970
9. Peter Kleyn / Gaius Hiscox, Sunbeam Alpine 1967
10. John Dowson / Monica Dowson, Porsche 912 1966
11. Colin Martin / Kim Eaton, Ford Escort Mk II 1975
12. John Brooks / John Hurley, Mini Cooper 1965
13. Richard Groom /Baz Wheeler, Audi Quattro
14. Miles Chamberlain / Andrew Allen, Ford Cortina 1600 E 1967
15. Clive Martin / Anji Martin, Ford Escort Sport Mk I 1974
16. Jeff Hooley / Ian Hooley, Austin Healey 100/4 1954

Best performance on the regularity tests:  Colin Poxon / Mick Worrell
Best autotest performance:  Neil Chetwynd / Lisa Thornton
Best Combined Performance:  Neil Lewis / Richard Fisher

The event finished with a light hearted tie break with a Le Mans start to a simple slalom and ending with the navigator running to the finish control.

New 100 Series Rally with a Twist

Richard Egger, in conjunction with Loughborough Car Club and the HRCR, is looking at the viability of running a 100 Series Rally with a twist.

Billed as a daylight rally for novices and nice cars, the event will be based around the network of lanes between Loughborough and Melton Mowbray during September.

The intention is for competitors to assemble during mid Sunday morning for bacon cobs, documentation, scrutineering and three tests.

Then they will tackle three road loops each 30 miles long and return to the start venue after each one to tackle three tests before the next loop to finish with supper in a local friendly hostelry. Start around 10am to be in the pub by 8pm

There will be 2 levels of handout. A beginners set which is described as "simplistic in the extreme" and an experts set which will sort out the "experts".

The entry will be around the £25 mark with £15 for insurance and to include breakfast. Competitors will pay for their own supper.

Plans are at the point where we need to assess the level of interest, so if this takes your fancy, email Richard Egger at richard@rpegger.co.uk

Kent Summer 100 - Sat 2nd August 2008

Trying out the Sunbeam Rapier that they'll be using on the Rally of the Tests later this year, Malcolm Jones and Richard Dresner won the Kent Summer 100 Rallly on 2nd August, with only 33 seconds dropped over 13 regularity timing points.  Completing the podium placings, not many seconds in arrears, were local crews Graham Mayes/Keith Howard (MG Magnette) and Trevor Hawkins/Simon Ingarfield (SAAB 96V4).

Tim & Sam Greg in their MGBGT were in close contention with the Rapier, being only 2 seconds behind at the lunch halt, but they missed one codeboard on the final section which dropped them from 2nd to 4th.

BBO 100 Rally - Sat 24th May 2008

Ten of the eleven starters completed the 99.9 mile route devised by David Kirkham.  The 28 marshals watching over the 22 competitors enjoyed the only good weather of the holiday weekend.  The eventual winners were Andy Jess and Richard Learner in the Sunbeam Alpine with the MGB GT mounted Eric Richardson and James Page a not too distant second.  As this was James' very first event he no doubt had a guiding hand from Eric who is now normally seen behind a lens.

In a creditable 4th overall was the best of the 'least experience' crews, Mark Jarvis and Roger Chenery in the luxury of a Humber Sceptre.

 Summary results are available below.
